What are UK Life and Pension funds?
A life fund is a portfolio into which the policyholder’s life insurance premiums are paid into and claims are paid out of. This portfolio can include stocks, bonds, cash and alternatives. Unlike other fund types such as OEICs, life funds can only be purchased by pension providers and insurers and are not available for direct sale to retail investors.
A pension fund is an investment product into which scheme members pay contributions to accumulate a lump sum of money that will fund their retirement. Pension funds will also typically include contributions from the scheme member’s employer. This fund type is generally tax-free, and any income tax deducted from these contributions is paid back by the government. Similar to retail funds, the money paid into pension funds is invested into a range of themed funds, except they are run specifically for retirement savers.
