What is an investment fund?
An investment fund is an investment product that pools together the money of individual investors, with a fund manager using this money to invest in assets such as stocks, bonds, property or cash. Funds are popular with investors as they can be an easy way to get exposure to a range of underlying investments and diversify a portfolio across different asset classes and markets. Investing in a mutual fund also requires little effort on the investor’s part, as the fund manager is responsible for making buy and sell decisions with the aim of generating positive returns. This is referred to as an "actively managed fund", unlike ETFs, which are typically "passively managed" funds.
Like stocks or ETFs, when an investor invests in an investment fund, they are issued a number of shares or units in the fund, with each share/unit representing an equal portion of the fund’s value. Depending on the fund in question (and its profitability), investors may receive dividend or distribution payments from the fund.
Why you should track your Irish investment funds with Sharesight
Sharesight supports all Irish investment funds covered by Morningstar price data — over 28,000 — which will continue to grow as additional funds enter the market and are included in the Sharesight database.
As users add Irish investment funds to their portfolios (details below), they can get the full picture of their investment performance by viewing their funds with the rest of their holdings, whether they are stocks, ETFs or even custom investments such as property. This makes it easy for investors to see the impact of specific investments as part of the overall return of their portfolio.
On Sharesight’s Portfolio Overview page, you can see the performance of your Irish investment funds alongside the rest of the assets in your portfolio.
For greater insight into their portfolio’s performance, investors can also access a range of powerful reporting tools, such as the contribution analysis report. Available to investors on Sharesight’s Investor or Expert plan, this report is one tool investors can use to see how their Irish investment funds have contributed to their portfolio’s overall performance. The screenshot below, for example, shows the report being run on a European investor’s portfolio, with Irish investment funds contributing 29.15% or €10,244 to the portfolio’s overall return during the current financial year (at the time of publishing).
By running Sharesight’s contribution analysis report, investors can see the impact of Irish investment funds on their portfolio’s overall return over the date range of their choice.
How to track Irish investment funds in Sharesight

-
Add your holdings to your portfolio(s) by searching for the fund’s name or ISIN code in the FundIE market. You can also use the Sharesight File Importer to bulk import trades to your portfolio.
-
Sharesight converts the prices and valuations of your holdings from their listed market to your portfolio’s base currency. It also automatically calculates any currency fluctuations on a daily basis and backfills past distributions (and continues to add new ones as they are announced).
Knowing your fund’s unique ISIN identifier will make it easier to import your trades to Sharesight.
What is an ISIN?
An International Securities Identification Number (or ISIN) is a unique 12-digit code that identifies a specific security. Unlike ticker symbols, which are specific to stock exchanges, the ISIN is universally recognisable. This makes it easy to identify the specific fund you are looking for in Sharesight.
